  • 5 Reasons to Choose Third-Party Telecom Maintenance Over the OEM

When I talk to companies about third-party Avaya and Nortel telecom maintenance solutions, I initially get a lot of resistance from people who believe that the OEM is the best alternative for off-warranty service contracts. I attribute this to myths about the level of support and expertise that OEMs offer as compared to that of third-party providers. It’s my job to de-bunk those myths.

If you’re trying to save money by maintaining your telecom equipment past th...

  • Avaya Pays $13.5 Million in Whistle-Blower Suit

Avaya, the Basking Ridge-based telecommunications company, has paid $13.5 million to settle a whistle-blower lawsuit alleging that it overbilled its biggest customer: the U.S. government.

Avaya paid the money last month but did not admit any wrongdoing, according to a statement Wednesday by the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. CIT Group, also accused of perpetuating the illegal scheme after it acquired a portion of Avaya’s customer base, separately paid $3.1 mil...

  • SIP is More than VoIP

“What the Heck is a SIP Trunk?” I asked this question on the SIP and Serve blog, in January of 2009. Two years later, I feel the need to revisit the topic and ask “Is SIP Trunking still the same, or has it changed as I predicted it would?”

SIP Trunking has become the prevailing standard for low cost, multi-presence communications applications. However, in 2009, I kept it simple:

A SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) Trunk is a connection between two network elements, a P...

  • IP Phone Power Bill Can Be High

The TCO for VoIP should include the electrical power bill. The cost to power the IP phones can be much higher when comparing one vendor’s power consumption vs. another vendor. This becomes apparent in the Tolly Enterprise’s report “Avaya 9600 Series Voice over IP Phones: Energy Consumption Evaluation versus Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 Series”.

The Tolly report came to three major conclusions:

    1. In every scenario tested by Tolly, the Avaya 9600 phones consumed 40% to 6...

  • Nortel News

Cornerstone Communications continued to follow the Nortel Patent selloff, as have many in the world of telecommunications.  News of the conclusion of the 116-year epic of Nortel Networks Corp. leads one to reflect on a few things. It’s hard to remain optimistic about the tech and telecommunications industry in this country when one of the biggest and best companies has come and gone.

At the end of June, Nortel began the process of selling off all of its remaining patents. A conso...
